79 Series TOYOTA LANDCRUISER — XGO Tray, Canopy and Chassis-Mount Body

The Toyota LandCruiser 79 Series stands on the shoulders of the 70 Series lineage—decades of mine sites, stations and outback tracks proving it’ll work hard and get you home. Today’s 79 keeps that toughness while adding the refinement and tech that make it a standout whether you’re towing, touring or using it as a daily workhorse.

But with modern tech comes complexity. Owners are often hesitant about modifying their 79, particularly when it comes to removing the factory tub and fitting a tray, canopy or chassis-mount body. Factory cameras and sensors, wiring looms, trailer and lighting integration, and even how the fuel filler is adapted—all raise fair questions about what happens when you make changes.

That’s where we come in. At Teralume Industries, we’ve engineered the XGO™ range of trays, canopies and chassis-mount bodies specifically for platforms like the 79 Series. Our mission is simple: help you modify your vehicle without compromise—clean, ADR-compliant installs, safety tech that keeps working, and wiring so tidy you barely notice it.

The Challenge of Modern Vehicle Modifications

Fitting out a 79 Series LandCruiser isn’t like bolting on an old farm tray. The bones are tough, but getting a dependable, legal rig means ticking the right boxes:

  • Fuel filler & venting: Adapt the OEM setup correctly—especially with long-range/dual tanks—to avoid slow fills or pressure issues.
  • Reverse camera, plate & lighting: Relocate the camera cleanly, keep the plate visible/illuminated, and position lights/reflectors to ADR specs.
  • Wiring reliability: Use protected runs, sealed pass-throughs, strain relief and labelled circuits so corrugations don’t cause faults.
  • Tow integration: Keep trailer wiring, plugs and brake controllers tidy and protected; ensure rear bar/step and plug placement don’t hinder towing or visibility.
  • GVM & axle loads: Plan weight distribution; consider certified GVM upgrades if your setup demands it.
  • ADR & warranty: Meet Australian Design Rules to stay road-legal/insured; quality, documented installs help protect manufacturer warranty.

We’ve built the XGO™ range to address these issues head-on — so you don’t need to. We've successfully completed countless 79 Series conversions, including our own!

Tray & Canopy vs Chassis-Mount Body

A tray and canopy setup is a modular system — the tray forms the flatbed platform, and the canopy bolts on top, giving owners flexibility to swap, remove, or upgrade components over time.

A chassis-mount body is different: it’s fixed directly to the chassis as a one-piece unit. That makes it lighter overall, ideal for people who don’t plan on removing their canopy and want to save weight without losing functionality.

There is no wrong and right, only what is more important to you. Both setups will allow the same weight carrying ability and fitout space for all of your accessories and power ups.

Your Landcruiser, Your GVM!

  • How GVM works: GVM is the max your 79 can legally weigh when loaded. Everything counts — passengers, fuel, accessories, tray/canopy/body, tools and gear.
  • Payload impact: Most current LC79 dual-cab cab-chassis list a 3,510 kg GVM and an unladen (kerb) mass ~2,215 kg; across variants expect roughly 2,200–2,300 kg. That leaves about 1,200–1,300 kg payload before accessories and people.
  • Towing link: The weight applied to the tow ball directly reduces your payload (e.g., up to 350 kg ball load means 350 kg less payload left for gear and passengers). LC79 is rated to 3,500 kg braked towing; many ADR-approved towbars for 79 specify 350 kg TBM.
  • Teralume design: Our trays and chassis-mount bodies are built light so you keep usable payload for passengers, fuel, tools and touring gear. We plan weights up-front and map load distribution so you stay within limits.
  • Upgrade options: If your build demands more, we work with certified GVM upgrades (common LC79 packages lift GVM to 3,900–4,200 kg; some revise GCM to 7,400 kg).

Wheels, Tyres & Suspension

One of the most important conversations we have with customers is around suspension and their wheel and tyres combination.

Suspensions:
Most factory suspension that vehicles are sold with is adequate for daily running around without weight. When we increase the weight, we strongly suggest that suspension is installed that suits the additional weight to keep the car safe, and well mannered.

We can offer:
Fulcrum Formula and F4R Adjustable suspension kits, along with parabolic and traditional leaf springs.

Tough Dog GVM upgrades along side standard duty lift kits.

Wheels & Tyres:
We offer ROH wheels and tyres to allow for a better suited fitment of wheel size, and offset and match it with stronger, more suitable tyres to increase durability offroad and allowing you to bag out the tyres when the going gets rough!

Internal Fitout

We offer a full range of fit-out options to maximise the usability, comfort and practicality of your vehicle. From premium lighting solutions to Bushman fridge setups, storage and pantry systems, everything is designed to make work and travel easier.

  • Lighting – Choose from LED strip, surface-mount and ambient lighting to create the perfect internal and external setup.
  • Refrigeration – Our go-to pick is the 130L Bushman upright fridges, trusted for reliability and efficiency.
  • Drawers & Tables – Available in three sizes (500W, 780W and 1380W) to suit a wide range of builds and storage needs.
  • Pantry Systems – Select from 280W or 500W pantry modules for convenient camp and travel organisation.
  • Shelving – Overhead shelving units (500W and 800W) mount cleanly to the canopy ceiling to keep gear accessible yet out of the way.

Every option is designed around real-world use, so whether you’re setting up for work, touring or both, your build is ready for whatever comes next.
