BYD Shark — XGO Tray, Canopy and Chassis-Mount Body

The BYD Shark has jumped straight into Australia’s dual-cab conversation—refined, comfortable, cleverly packaged and stacked with tech—equally at home towing, touring or working.

It also sparked debate: a 2,500 kg braked tow figure trails the 3,500 kg class norm in Australia, many owners wonder how a tray/canopy or chassis-mount body will affect charger placement, AC/DC charging behaviour, high-voltage service loops and the 240 V V2L outlet—plus what it means for warranty.

That’s where we come in. At Teralume Industries, we engineer the XGO™ range specifically for the Shark platform to deliver installs that preserve factory sensors/cameras, maintain safe access to charge ports and V2L, protect and route high-voltage and low-voltage cabling correctly, and leave wiring so tidy you barely notice it—so you can modify your Shark without compromise.

The Challenge of Modern Vehicle Modifications

It’s no secret that modifying a modern ute isn’t like the old days. Pulling the tub and throwing on a tray used to be straightforward. Today, the BYD Shark adds hybrid systems and advanced driver-assist tech that make careful planning world level workmanship essential.

Here are the most common concerns we hear from Shark owners:

  • Sensor relocation & calibration: Blind-spot monitoring, parking sensors and ADAS radar/camera modules must be repositioned and validated post-install or you’ll trigger faults.
  • Cameras & lighting: 360°/reverse cameras, tow-assist and integrated lighting need correct placement and rewiring so factory features keep working.
  • Fuel filler, charging ports & V2L: Keep the petrol filler cleanly integrated, maintain clear access to AC/DC charge ports, and preserve safe, obvious access to the 240V V2L outlet with proper protection and routing.
  • High-voltage safety & thermal paths: Protect HV (orange) cabling and service disconnects, avoid blocking battery cooling routes, and segregate 12V accessories from HV systems.
  • Towing & payload reality: The Shark is rated to 2,500 kg braked towing; ball weight reduces payload one-for-one, so tow setups must be planned with real margins.
  • ADR compliance: Number-plate position/illumination, reflector and light placement, rear overhang and load restraint must meet Australian Design Rules to stay road-legal and insured.
  • Warranty & documentation: BYD backs the vehicle 6 years/150,000 km and the HV battery 8 years/160,000 km; clean, ADR-compliant installs with documentation help protect support.

We’ve built the XGO™ range to address these issues head-on — so you don’t have to worry about anything. We’ve successfully completed many BYD Shark conversions and are fully equipped and ready for yours.

Tray & Canopy vs. Chassis Mount Body

A tray and canopy setup is a modular system — the tray forms the flatbed platform, and the canopy bolts on top, giving owners flexibility to swap, remove, or upgrade components over time.

A chassis-mount body is different: it’s fixed directly to the chassis as a one-piece unit. That makes it lighter overall, ideal for people who don’t plan on removing their canopy and want to save weight without losing functionality.

There is no wrong and right, only what is more important to you. Both setups will allow the same weight carrying ability and fitout space for all of your accessories and power ups.

Your Shark, Your GVM

  • How GVM works: GVM is the max your BYD Shark can legally weigh when loaded. Everything counts — passengers, fuel, accessories, tray/canopy/body, tools and gear.
  • Payload impact: With a 3,500 kg GVM and around 2,710 kg kerb weight, you’re left with about ~790 kg payload before people and accessories. That figure also includes fuel and tow-ball download if you’re towing.
  • Towing link: The Shark is rated to 2,500 kg braked towing; tow-ball download reduces payload one-for-one (e.g., 200 kg on the ball = 200 kg less payload for gear and passengers). Always check your vehicle and towbar ratings.
  • Teralume design: Our trays and chassis-mount bodies are built light so you can carry more people, fuel, tools and touring gear without maxing out GVM. We usually add ~280–550 kg and remove ~200 kg when your tub/bed is removed.
  • Upgrade options: We work with certified GVM upgrades where available. BYD has also indicated it’s exploring factory-backed payload/towing upgrades for the Shark; talk to us and we’ll advise the best path as options formalise.

Wheels, Tyres & Suspension

One of the most important conversations we have with customers is around suspension and their wheel and tyres combination.
Most factory suspension that vehicles are sold with is adequate for daily running around without weight. When we increase the weight, we strongly suggest that suspension is installed that suits the additional weight to keep the car safe, and well mannered.

Suspensions:
Fulcrum Formula and F4R Adjustable suspension kits, along with parabolic and traditional leaf springs. Tough Dog GVM upgrades along side standard duty lift kits.

Wheels & Tyres:
We offer ROH wheels and tyres to allow for a better suited fitment of wheel size, and offset and match it with stronger, more suitable tyres to increase durability offroad and allowing you to bag out the tyres when the going gets rough!

Internal Fitout

We offer a full range of fit-out options to maximise the usability, comfort and practicality of your vehicle. From premium lighting solutions to Bushman fridge setups, storage and pantry systems, everything is designed to make work and travel easier.

  • Lighting – Choose from LED strip, surface-mount and ambient lighting to create the perfect internal and external setup.
  • Refrigeration – Our go-to pick is the 85L Bushman upright fridges, trusted for reliability and efficiency.
  • Drawers & Tables – Available in three sizes (500W, 780W and 1380W) to suit a wide range of builds and storage needs.
  • Pantry Systems – Select from 280W or 500W pantry modules for convenient camp and travel organisation.
  • Shelving – Overhead shelving units (500W and 800W) mount cleanly to the canopy ceiling to keep gear accessible yet out of the way.

Every option is designed around real-world use, so whether you’re setting up for work, touring or both, your build is ready for whatever comes next.
